This performance, created for the East African Nights of Tolerance in Kigali, is a collaboration between the Amizero Kompagnie and choreographer Tobiasz Sebastian Berg. It merges traditional Rwandan dance with contemporary movement to address the urgent issue of Earth’s extinction.
The performance reinterprets traditional dance in a modern context, prompting the audience to think about the environmental crisis and our connection to the planet. The dancers convey this narrative through their movements, highlighting the need for awareness and action regarding ecological challenges.
A standout aspect of the performance is the set design and costumes by Ela Szurpicka, who employs upcycling techniques to draw attention to ecological concerns within the arts. By transforming discarded materials into artistic elements, her work emphasizes sustainability and shows how creativity can address environmental issues.
The project was made possible with support from the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Poland, showcasing the significance of international collaboration in addressing global challenges. This performance not only reflects on cultural heritage but also promotes a sense of environmental responsibility.
Through this blend of dance, design, and dialogue, the piece encourages audiences to consider their impact on the environment and inspires a commitment to creating a more sustainable future. It serves as a reminder that art can play a crucial role in raising awareness and driving positive change in our relationship with the Earth.
